Storytelling from &
At 45 years old, Sarah from Plymouth, UK, reflects on a journey marked by resilience and reinvention. After nearly two decades in local government customer service, Sarah’s life took a twist following complications from life-changing surgery. This led her to find comfort and purpose through volunteering with our global Voice community, which collaborates with real people powered insights and life experiences to inspire innovations that promote healthier, longer, and happier lives.
Sarah’s involvement with Voice happened serendipitously. “I heard about Voice through the Leed’s Research Institute, which was doing work around diabetes,” she recalls. After participating in a focus group panel, she felt a strong urge to get involved in similar projects. The researcher I worked with mentioned Voice and their various projects. Since then, I’ve applied for several projects and been involved with several Voice opportunities. I take part in 2 to 3 research calls a week. It gives me a lift and a sense of purpose.”
The impact of this involvement has been profound for Sarah. “Volunteering with Voice has become my passion and new focus since I’m unable to work and spend a lot of time managing my health,” she shares. “Research and speaking to PhD students and other researchers with Voice have given me a real lift. It helps people understand what it’s like to live with chronic conditions and makes me feel I’m giving something back.”
Getting involved in research projects from Voice made me feel good for the first time in months.
Sarah’s most fulfilling project to date was with Bournemouth University, focusing on domestic abuse, which was deeply personal to her. “As someone who had suffered from domestic abuse but who had also worked in safeguarding roles, it grabbed my interest. It was well-managed and included diverse participants, from GPs to those with customer-focused roles. It was incredibly refreshing to speak to other women who had experienced similar situations and how their employers helped or didn’t help them.”
For Sarah, having a purpose is integral to a fulfilling life. “Since giving up work due to my physical health problems, I felt lost, even suicidal in the early days. Getting involved in research projects from Voice made me feel good for the first time in months. It gives me a lift to do something useful and share my experiences to improve people’s lives.”
"Every call feels like Christmas morning—I'm always wondering what I'll learn this week."
Voice has also opened doors Sarah never imagined. “I’ve spoken at medical conferences, both online and in person, and even been invited to the Houses of Parliament. It was surreal but amazing. These opportunities have given me a sense of purpose and connection again.”
Sarah passionately believes in the importance of purpose and goal-setting. “Having a purpose makes a huge difference. It helps me stay positive, even in low moments. My dad, who just retired at 70, has always kept busy, and it’s been vital to his health and happiness. I want to be like him.”
Looking back, Sarah advises her younger self to “keep an open mind and keep on learning. Volunteering has always been important to me, and I’d encourage everyone to take part and give that little extra. It might help you find a new passion or career, even with severe medical issues. Keep pushing those boundaries, no matter what!”
For Sarah, there’s much to appreciate about Voice. “Voice offers an independent platform with diverse opportunities. It’s dynamic, with a large community involved, making it a great place to connect, especially while managing health issues at home. The invaluable feedback it provides to universities, businesses, and hopefully one day the NHS can greatly benefit them.” She adds, “Voice isn’t just about medical insights; it’s about respecting opinions and honoring our life experiences.”
Through her journey with Voice, Sarah has found a renewed sense of purpose, turning adversity into a source of empowerment and inspiration for others. “I’m naturally curious,” she smiles. “Every call feels like Christmas morning—I’m always wondering what I’ll learn this week.” Joining Voice has been transformative for Sarah. When asked what she would say to someone about joining Voice, she enthusiastically shares, “Give Voice a chance; it will change your perspective on research. You get to know and meet people you would not normally encounter. It will ignite your interest and you’ll learn so much.”
